If you're a facility manager renovating a retail floor or a contractor wiring a new office build, you don't need another lecture on the 'future of light'. You need a list. A specific, actionable list. This is a 5-step checklist for setting up a Panasonic smart lighting system—from choosing the right downlight to integrating your zigbee controller. Step 1: Verify Your Power and Driver Specs
This is where most screw-ups happen. You can't just grab a downlight mini (like our popular Panasonic models) and assume it'll work with the existing wiring.
What to check:
- Voltage: Is it 120V or 277V? Commercial spaces often use 277V. A 120V-only driver will fail immediately.
- Driver Location: Is it integral or remote? For a dropped ceiling with limited access, a remote driver makes future swaps easier.
- Dimmability: If you're using a zigbee smart lighting controller, ensure the driver is 0-10V or TRIAC dimmable. Not all LED downlights are.

This is the step that will save you from a call at 3 AM. Every smart lighting system needs a manual override for fire alarms and emergency situations.
Checklist:
- Does the system have an emergency input? Most zigbee controllers don't. You need a dedicated emergency relay or a separate circuit for emergency fixtures.
- Test the bypass: Flip the main switch off and on. The system should default to 100% output. If it doesn't, you have a code violation.
- Document it: Write down which circuit is emergency. Tape a label inside the electrical panel.
